Joseph Hudson, inventor of the The Metropolitan whistle is a man after our own hearts:
- he converted his wash house into a workshop and started building snuff boxes, cork screws and whistles to supplement his family’s income.
- in 1883 The London Metropolitan Police sought to replace the policeman’s rattle (seen above), and Hudson responded with a hands free device that could be held in the mouth.
- the trick was to invent a device whereby the sound would carry. While playing his violin Hudson accidentally dropped it, as it smashed on the floor it made the sound that somehow inspired the design of his whistle. The first tests were a success: the sound travelled over a mile.
