Dark Skies No More
By Finn O’Hara, Guide to Field Photography
I was given the title of Guide to Field Photography, and I’m pleased to post my first message today. It’s been a long time coming. My posts will be informative and instructional in nature, as I am a location based photographer, and I use a lot of gadgets, apps, and gear to assist me in taking pictures. I encourage you to ask questions through this forum, and to use it as a place to share knowledge and delve deeper into your photographic passions.
First up is something that I just found online, and it looks to be my new best location assistant. It’s called Dark Sky, and it’s an “accurate short-term weather predictor” app that could help me on location. It’s not available yet but I see great things for this little app. How could this benefit me? When I’m waking up at an early hour for a morning shoot I immediately go to the Weather Network online, and check out the 24hr weather graph which is reliable but clunky, and at times deceiving, and everyone I’m with is a sudden expert on what’s about to happen next. Too many times I’ve had producers or nervous clients pull the plug on a shoot because they’re concerned about what the sky is telling them.
As much as I’m trying to learn about meteorology, I think that apps like Dark Sky will help with my weather prediction education. So if you find that this app would be useful for you as you hit the woods, kick in a few shekels. You’ll thank me at 5 AM someday.
