Lumberland, New York, Fall 2011
So this is how it goes: we bust out of New York City almost every friday afternoon, load up the car with food, beer, axes, Disston crosscut saws, skidding tongs, a come along hand winch capable of pulling two tons of log, and head north to Lumberland, NY. Yes Lumberland- it’s a real place, our secret hideout. We drive north from New York City to Lumberland in search of the fallen hardwood. Our property has no running water, no electricity, no cell phone reception, and a self-imposed “no chainsaw” rule. We usually get there around 7 or 8, and the first order of business is to gather wood and start a fire… a fire which sometimes - depending on weather - burns steady for the next 48 hours. During the day we work hard to find and gather wood. We spend the day preparing for the night - and when it comes - the fire is our nucleus, our pageant. We cook our meals on it, we eat red meat with our bare hands like savages, we dance around it and then we sit and drink our beer, relax, and tell stories.
Stay tuned in the coming months as we present some of these stories and pictures of our time spent in fabled Lumberland. Pictured above: Peter, Hunter, and Ben chopping wood and hanging out at “The Fort” in Lumberland. Photograph by Nate Bressler.
